Reclaiming Democracy: A Call to Action for Texans
In the midst of uncertainty and division, there are moments that ignite hope. Recently, I attended a Texas Tribune webinar that shed light on the power of local perspectives and the potential for positive change. Reflecting on the discussions held during the webinar, I hope to rally my fellow Texans to action.
One key takeaway was the detrimental impact of gerrymandering on our democratic process. Despite 55% of Texans residing in more progressive suburban areas, gerrymandering has effectively neutralized the voting power of progressives, distorting our two-party system and suppressing the voices of the majority. But here’s the thing: gerrymandering’s grip on our state could be loosened if we, the people, simply show up and vote.
Education emerged as a central theme during the discussions. Mayor Muns of Plano eloquently addressed critical issues within the Plano Independent School District, highlighting the economic consequences of inadequate school funding. Insufficient education funding not only jeopardizes our children’s future but also threatens our state’s economic vitality because businesses require a well-rounded and educated workforce. When we divest in public education we run the risk of losing the businesses we worked so hard to recruit.
One of the most alarming revelations was the stark disparity in voter turnout between different age groups. In the 2022 mid-term elections, only 31.2% of eligible voters between 18 and 29 voted, compared to 66.8% of those 65 and older. This lack of engagement not only undermines the democratic process but also allows legislators to ignore crucial issues like climate change and gun control, believing that young voices are apathetic.
The misleading rhetoric emanating from our federal and state legislatures is concerning. We cannot allow our lawmakers to deceive us with misleading statistics and disinformation. It’s time we hold them accountable for their actions and demand truth and transparency in policymaking.
Amidst these challenges lies an opportunity for change. If we, the people of Texas, collectively raise our voices and exercise our right to vote, we can reclaim our power and shape the future of our state. By increasing voter turnout, we can dismantle the stronghold of gerrymandering and foster a more representative democracy.
So, let’s not succumb to cynicism or apathy. Instead, let’s channel our frustrations into action. Let’s show up at the polls, let our voices be heard, and demand the change we want to see. Together, we can build a Texas where every voice matters, where democracy truly thrives.
